Cloud, Managed and Hybrid Hosting Services Provider Hostway Releases Cloud Survey Results

Cloud, managed and hybrid hosting services provider Hostway has released initial results of a survey it conducted on attitudes towards the cloud. Specifically, the survey considered how people felt about the cloud in relation to more traditional in-house hosting services. The results of the survey indicated ‘surprising shifts’ in the way people think about cloud security, cloud scalability and the performance of the cloud.

Hostway’s survey was a response to the continual growth of the cloud and the need for industry professionals to provide the type of services clients require. The company will release full results and related infographics on the cloud industry in the near future, but has indicated some preliminary results.

Generally, the survey indicated that, for a number of reasons, most of those who responded to the survey prefer public cloud hosting services to in-house solutions. Specifically, the survey revealed that 62% of respondents believe key services (web and database servers, email, CRM services, collaboration software, etc.) are more secure in a public cloud environment than an in-house environment. This represents a major shift in perception in relation to cloud security, even amongst those who traditionally favor cloud services.

The survey also indicated that 80% of those asked believed public cloud services are more scalable than in-house solutions. In addition, survey results indicate that 73% of those surveyed prefer public cloud hosting services to in-house services because performance is better. However, the results also suggest issues as far as database services are concerned – only 55% believed databases were more secure in the public cloud, although 64% suggested they thought databases performed better in the cloud.

“We’ve noticed a trend toward greater acceptance of public cloud hosting services over the past year,” said Aaron Hollobaugh, Hostway’s Vice President of Marketing. “Organizations that were previously hesitant are now moving larger, more robust database workloads into the public cloud environment, and we’re seeing rising demand for hybrid or public cloud installations from companies that previously used more traditional managed hosting services.”

Hostway’s survey offers some curious results? What do you think about the cloud in relation to in-house services? Add your comments below.
