Alibaba Group Launches Beijing Data Center

May 06, 2014
by Staff Writer

The Alibaba Group has launched a data center in Beijing, China through its Aliyun subsidiary. The company, which runs the Chinese business portal Alibaba.com, has opened three facilities to date, with previous centers launching in Qingdao and Hangzhou. The latest launch will help Alibaba offer customers faster response times and enhanced reliability.

The news comes in the wake of Alibaba’s announcement late last year that it would offer cloud services to customers outside of China, with the suggestion that the United States and countries in Southeast Asia would be targeted. A number of reports have suggested the company might also be looking to open facilities outside China.

The Aliyun data center will offer a range of services including cloud servers, storage and database options. The center will have an initial offering of 10,000 servers and focus on customers that include Chinese government organizations located in Beijing and Northern China.

Aliyun is China's largest cloud computing provider and acquired personal cloud storage vendor, Kanbox, late last year. The company also partnered with ChinaSoft International in August last year with a view to managing cloud projects initiated by Zhejiang province’s local government.
