Amazon Web Services (AWS) Announces Cloud Computing Services in Mainland China

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of cloud computing services based in mainland China. The company has a presence in four Asia Pacific regions, and ten regions globally, giving it a unprecedented global footprint and market share.

AWS' Chinese operation signed a MOU with the Government of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region which addresses AWS' aim to build cloud services, and also suggests that AWS will host some Chinese government workloads. A range of offerings will be offered via the new region, including storage, compute, database and load balancing. The company will preview services for the new region in early 2014, but the preview will be available by invitation only.

AWS has also established partnerships with Chinese consulting partners who will help the company adapt its technologies to their new business environment and the needs of Chinese organizations. Old customers utilizing services through the new region will have to sign up again - credentials for other AWS accounts will not function in the new region, nor will the credentials of the accounts acquired within the region operate elsewhere in the AWS network.

AWS' move comes in the wake of Microsoft's partnership with 21Vianet which gives Azure a presence in mainland China, but in light of its work with US government agencies, including the CIA, AWS' expansion is likely to raise some eyebrows. According to Forbes' website, AWS suggested that "due to China’s legal and regulatory requirements, the Chinese region will remain isolated from all other AWS regions on an ongoing basis".
