Australian Cloud Provider CloudCentral Acquires US Software Start-up’s Intellectual Property

Australian cloud provider CloudCentral has acquired the Intellectual Property (IP) rights of DEY Storage Systems, a software start-up based in San Mateo, California, United States. As a result of the purchase the company will add software defined storage services to its suite of products and services. The news of the acquisition was provided by Kristoffer Sheather, the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founder, and comes ahead of its reverse listing on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) planned for in June 2014.

In 2012 DEY Storage Systems received $3 million to support its efforts writing software for data center storage management. Its software allows major data center customers to purchase “high performance storage” in a similar way to major players like Amazon, Facebook and Google. This lowers costs while maintaining high quality services.

CloudCentral specialises in establishing fully managed cloud infrastructure. The company’s purchase of DEY Storage Systems’ IP allows it to introduce Software Defined Storage services that allow customers to choose software providers that are not tied to specific hardware. As the company’s data centers are based in Australia, the company also caters to enterprises bound by regulations regarding offshore data storage.

"We see this as a transformational deal from both a technology and investment perspective. The addition of Software Defined Storage services eliminates the need to pay third parties for storage and gives us more control over the future development of our platform," explained Kristoffer Sheather. "Expanding into the private cloud creates a completely new offering for us, while reducing costs for our public cloud customers as we don't need to pay the big vendors' really high storage costs. We would be the first Australian cloud provider to own their entire stack from end to end, and doing it in a completely unique way."
