Chinese Cloud Provider Alibaba Announces Opening of Fifth Data Center

September 01, 2014
by Staff Writer

Chinese cloud provider Alibaba has announced the opening of its fifth data center in Shenzhen, China. The move comes in the wake of its recent opening of a fourth data center in Hong Kong. Its other centers are located on mainland China.

Alibaba, which operates cloud solutions under the AliCloud brand, has broad ambitions as far as the cloud is concerned. Although its position in the market is currently eclipsed by major players, the opening of the new center is a step towards it challenging to dominance of the likes of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google and Microsoft. Launched in 2009, AliCloud already generates revenues in the region of $38 million per quarter.

Alibaba is due to launch on the New York stock exchange and has declared revenues of $2.54 billion for the last quarter. AliCloud was initially a proprietary solution used to support Alibaba’s websites and ecommerce activities, but morphed into a profit-making business in its own right. The company’s customers include Chinese businesses of a range of sizes, and its cloud service is a favorite of gaming companies.
