Chinese Telephone Manufacturer Xiaomi to Open Data Center in India

Chinese telephone manufacturer Xiaomi is to open a data center in India. The company, which has swiftly become the fifth largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, will open the center by the end of 2015. The news comes in the wake of a warning by India’s air force that Xiaomi devices represented a threat to privacy. The move is seen as a means of deflecting concerns that Xiaomi collects users’ data and stores it in Beijing.

Xiaomi sells mobile telephones that focus on the huge market for inexpensive smartphones. In India the company sells devices through online retailer Flipkart.com. It recently suggested it aims to sell 100,000 phones a week in India in October.

Xiaomi has denied that it collects data beyond that which users agree can be collected. Another measure the company is taking to address data collection issues is to move “non-Chinese” data away from hosting in China and into Amazon data centers.

Data collection fears have proven a stumbling block for Xiaomi and Huawei – another low-cost smartphone manufacturer – stalling their expansion efforts in the West. However, Xiaomi seems intent on expansion. The company recently hired former Google executive Hugo Barra who was formerly in charge of Android-related activity at the corporation.

Do you think that Xiaomi opening its own data center in India will be enough to elevate concerns about data collection? Let us know the details. Add your comments below.
