Cloud Solutions Provider Cisco to Acquire Private Cloud Provider Metacloud

by Staff Writer

Cloud solutions provider Cisco is to acquire Pasadena, California-based private cloud provider Metacloud. The company focuses on providing "OpenStack-as-a-Service" by offering private clouds that are underpinned by the OpenStack cloud computing platform. The acquisition will be completed later this month and Metacloud employees will be absorbed by Cisco’s Cloud Infrastructure and Managed Services organization. Financial details were not revealed.

Cisco, which alongside cloud solutions offers data center, mobility and service provider solutions, has previously stated its intention to make an investment of more than US$1 billion to grow its cloud business and establish a “network of clouds” provided by "OpenStack" partners. The move redirects it efforts from public clouds which are currently subject to a price war between main competitors such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon.

Metacloud has a vision that companies will one day utilize a blend of private and public clouds alongside their own IT in-house capability. Its value to customers is that its solutions provide the benefit of public clouds alongside the security and control provided by private clouds. The service also allows providers to merge combine public cloud deployments with OpenStack private clouds.
