Cloud Startup Loom Launches Services

October 06, 2013
by Staff Writer

Cloud startup Loom has launched services to the general public. The company, whose services compete with Apple's iCloud service, has previously been involved in beta testing and is likely to launch an iPhone app shortly. Support for Android is in the pipeline.

Loom's intention is to compete with Apple’s iCloud by taking some of its market share. The service provides 5GB of storage free of charge with options for additional storage on a paid basis. The company has not disclosed its current user base.

Loom is a photo and video cloud storage solution that allows users to access photos and videos on every type of mobile device. The solution does not require an ongoing internet connection and syncs the mobile device and the server when a connection is available. The company was previously financed by Y Combinator, whose startup funding model means that companies receive low-level investment on a regular basis.

Loom employs only 8 people, but has recently announced that it has received funding of $1.4 million from a number of sources, including Google Ventures, Tencent, and a number of "angel" investors.
