Cloud Storage Provider Dropbox Issues New Privacy Policy

February 23, 2014
by Staff Writer

Dropbox has stated that it will resist what it calls “blanket” government data requests and government monitoring of its users’ data. The company has also stated that technology companies like itself should be able to report the number of times governments make requests for users’ data, and that such requests should be limited to individual users and specific legal cases.

To underscore its commitment to cloud security, the cloud storage provider recently issued a new privacy policy that aims to address issues that have arisen in relation to revelations that the United State’s National Security Agency (NSA) routinely monitors data stored in the cloud.

An email notification sent to Dropbox users suggested, “We’ve added a section to our Privacy Policy that discusses our recently launched Government Data Request Principles. We’ve also made clarifications to better explain how our services will use your information. For example, we explain that when you give us access to your contacts, we’ll store them so that you – and only you – can do things like share your stuff easily, no matter what device you’re using.”

Dropbox’s new policy, which goes live March 24, 2014, contains an additional section that states its position as far as government data requests are concerned. The new section suggests: “Stewardship of your data is critical to us and a responsibility that we embrace. We believe that our users' data should receive the same legal protections regardless of whether it's stored on our services or on their home computer's hard drive.”
