Databricks Launches Big Data Cloud Platform

July 02, 2014
by Staff Writer

Databricks has launched Databricks Cloud - a Big Data cloud platform. The company is a commercial offshoot of Apache Spark and established by some of the Apache Spark project developers. The launch represents Databricks’ first product since it formalized as a company.

The new product aims to simplify Spark Clusters and make Big Data utilization easier for users to manage. Through leveraging the Apache Spark platform and the cloud, the company will also make Big Data faster. The initial product will run on Amazon Web Services (AWS). However, the company intends to transition the solution so it also runs Google Compute Engine and Microsoft Azure. Processing will be done entirely in memory rather than requiring disk reads, which generally slows down the processing procedure.

Databricks Cloud is comprised of three elements, The Databricks Platform and Databricks Workspace, alongside Spark. Offered in the cloud rather than as a conventional managed solution, it offers a ‘one-stop’ solution where users can process data without having to utilize or manage Hadoop clusters.

The solution offers a range of functions such as “Notebooks” which allows users to interact with data through graphs and charts. These can be pulled into a single interface which allows users to monitor data changes. It also offers a tool that allows users to fix times for when certain jobs should run. Users are also able to utilize third-party Spark applications for additional functions.

The launch came alongside news of another major event for the company – Databricks has just secured a $33 Million Series B investment. The investment was led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), an investment company with a focus on “early-stage companies in Information Technology, medical and life sciences”. With a contribution from Andreessen Horowitz, the company’s previous investor, investment in Databricks to date has totalled a massive $47 Million. The money will be used to expand the company and bring in new employees.
