Google's Ray Kurzweil Suggests Our Brains will be Connected to the Cloud in the Next 20 Years

Google's Ray Kurzweil has suggested that in the next 20 years human brains will be connected directly to the cloud. The comment was made during his recent TED talk entitled “The Hierarchy in your Brain” in which he suggested that our brains might soon be able to retrieve data from the cloud in the same way that mobile devices do today.

Established in 1990 by the non-profit Sapling Foundation, TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talks cover a range of areas under a broad umbrella title of "ideas worth spreading". Ray Kurzweil is recognized as a “futurist” whose visions for the future are as radical as they are plausible.

Mr. Kurzweil has suggested that with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as IBM's “Watson”, computers are now more able to manage natural human language - Watson is in fact famed for winning an episode of the American general knowledge TV quiz “Jeopardy”. Coupled with the fact that very soon Internet search will be able to draw on “billions” of websites and books, this ability means search engines will be able to act as a repository for all information, and ultimately be able to inform people when new information is available. However, his ideas extend well beyond search engines being static sources of information.

Mr. Kurzweil believes that it will soon be possible that nanobots will be able to enter the brain to create a synthetic cortex that leverages the cloud. He likens this development to human brain expansion over 2 million years ago which led to language and, ultimately, to science and technology. “We won’t be limited by the fixed architecture of the enclosure. We will expand without limits,” predicted Mr. Kurzweil.
