IBM Cloud Computing Company Softlayer Manages Malaysian University in the Cloud

January 13, 2014
by Staff Writer

IBM cloud computing company Softlayer is managing a Malaysian public university's presence in the cloud. The company has helped Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) migrate its administration system (developed by Kasbah Systems Software) to the cloud. The move is a bid by the university to improve administration procedures and ultimately improve the education its students receive.

The move comes on the heels of a number of Malaysian educational institutions migrating to the cloud, including International Islamic University Malaysia and the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology.

UPM, which has 27,000 students, launched a platform which offers students, teachers, management and staff access to web-based information and a range of online services. The platform also manages the university's whole educational procedure - from admission to graduation. The solution has increased the university's ability to manage enrolments and improve its internal controls.

A number of the university's departments will utilize the platform, including its Undergraduate School, Graduate School Office, Distance Learning School, Faculty of Economics and Management, and its Faculty of Communication and Modern Languages. UPM’s Bintulu campus in Sarawak, Malaysia will also utilize the platform.
