IBM Intends to Buy Cloud Data Transfer Provider Aspera

IBM intends to buy cloud data transfer provider Aspera. The company, which was recently in the news for launching services in China, announced its intention in a press release last week. The release suggested a “definitive agreement to acquire Emeryville, CA-based Aspera, Inc.” had been signed. Financial aspects of the proposed deal were not released.

Established in 2004, Aspera caters to around 2,000 customers and generates around $10-$20 million revenue per year. The company’s secure high-speed transfer technology allows companies to quickly transfer massive amounts of data around the world. Its customers include large organizations in the medical industry and the media, gaming and other sectors. The solution’s users can manage the speed at which data is transferred and, according to the company, speeds are in excess of those provided by WAN acceleration software and hardware – up to 500 megabits per second.

Such transfer speeds would significantly decrease the amount of time required to transfer data from one cloud to another, and this might provide IBM with an edge when cloud users are interested in changing provider to avoid "vendor lock-in”. This type of transmission power would also enable researchers in a number of locations to analyze big data. It would allow companies to analyze data quickly to establish trends within their organizations.
