IBM’s Cloud Infrastructure Platform Provider Launches Direct Link

June 11, 2014
by Staff Writer

IBM’s cloud infrastructure platform provider, SoftLayer, has launched ‘Direct Link’. Direct Link enables SoftLayer’s customers to create a direct, dedicated link between their IT infrastructures and SoftLayer’s cloud and private network services. This provides “faster and more consistent network performance” and makes data security more robust. In addition, the new service enables SoftLayer’s customers to establish hybrid solutions that “merge private infrastructure with the SoftLayer platform”.

IBM bought SoftLayer in June 2013 in a bid to enhance its cloud computing capabilities. SoftLayer has a global presence with 13 data centers located the United States, Europe and Asia. The company’s services include Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and its clientele includes some of the planet’s leading brands. SoftLayer’s new Direct Link service provides physical connection from its customers’ premises to its data centers via 18 global Points of Presence (PoPs) provided by SoftLayer partners such as Equinix, Telx, Coresite, Terremark, Pacnet, InterXion and TelecityGroup. The new service gives SoftLayer’s customers full infrastructure and service control access with higher network performance, refined workload and data migration, and enhanced data and operational security.

“The power of a company’s private infrastructure and internal applications increases exponentially when they are able to scale out onto the cloud,” explained SoftLayer’s Chief Technology Officer, Matt Chilek. “We have customers ranging from startups to enterprises, from SaaS providers to financial institutions that want to do just that. Direct Link helps them optimize their workloads and get more value out of their data. They can move both to and from SoftLayer as easily as if our bare metal and virtual servers and storage were part of their local area network.”

SoftLayer’s new Direct Link service is available to its customers at $147 per month with a 1Gbps network connection, or $997 per month for a 10Gbps network connection.
