IT and Communications Provider EarthLink Keeps Ciao Bella Gelato Up and Running in the Aftermath of Sandy

IT and communications provider EarthLink managed to keep frozen dessert wholesaler and retailer Bella Gelato up and running during the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The company – who has headquarters in Florham Park, New Jersey, USA – recently implemented an EarthLink virtualization solution which kept Bella Gelato operational after Sandy hit the east coast of the United States recently.

Ciao Bella converted its servers to an EarthLink Cloud Hosting solution in September of this year, meaning its data and applications were hosted virtually at an EarthLink data center. As a result, Ciao Bella’s online presence remained intact during the storm, with employees able to access company applications and place orders through the web, regardless of where they were in the United States, and despite Ciao Bella’s Florham Park facility in New Jersey being out of action for nearly two weeks. The company’s New Jersey-based employees were also able to work remotely from home during the post-storm period.

Although disaster recovery was not Ciao Bella’s immediate priority when changing to the cloud, it was one of the major benefits the company experienced since transition. Recognizing its IT infrastructure was aging, Ciao Bella consulted EarthLink on establishing a hosted infrastructure that the company’s employees at retail stores, warehouse and customer service center could utilize efficiently. The hosted infrastructure would also have to manage disaster recovery effectively, while allowing for scalability and company growth.

EarthLink’s solution comprised of three virtual servers, a Secure Hosted Email solution and managed services and managed support. With a cloud-based solution in place, Ciao Bella's sales force and production facility in Oregon remained open despite the company shutting down in New Jersey as a result of Sandy.

"Ciao Bella is a great example of how cloud hosting uses geographic diversity to keep a business operational even in extreme circumstances,” explained Executive Vice President of Products and Marketing at EarthLink, Mr. Michael D. Toplisek. “The company is also well-positioned for future expansion, with no need to buy new equipment for upgrades. They can now dedicate key resources to growth while EarthLink is there to manage their entire IT infrastructure."
