Kansas City Migrates to the Cloud

January 02, 2014
by Staff Writer

Kansas City has migrated to the Cloud. The city has shut down a mainframe computer that had supported the city's IT activity over the last 18 years. The IBM system was turned off by Carlos Valenciano, a member of the city's IT staff that helped initiate the system in 1995.

The city has adopted a sever- and cloud-based solution which will take over operation of a range of support functions including local government revenue and payroll, financial records, birth and death certificates. The city's IT department have now established a display which pays homage to the punch cards, cartridge reels, dumb terminals, green bar paper and microfiche it was dependent on for so many years.

"The dinosaur is passing away now - on to new technology," explained Mr. Valenciano while turning off the mainframe. "I didn't expect to be doing this. But it's quite interesting to see it go. It's passing - it's old technology, and we'll move forward now. We just have to remember our past."

Do you know of any other government agencies that are transitioning to cloud-based solutions? Let us know the details. Add your comments below.
