OnApp Aim to Bundle Storage with Cloud Management Platform by End of Q3 2012

OnApp have released their initial prices for their OnApp Storage, which soon will be bundled with the OnAPP Cloud platform for no additional cost later this year.

With traditional SAN technologies being deployed at a high price, taking up datacenter space and power and not scaling well for typical cloud workloads, OnApp Storage looks to counter these problems through utilizing patent-pending ‘smart disk’ technology.

Andreas Kunter, CEO of Dolphin IT Services claims OnApp has addressed the limitations by offering the desired performance and scalability at a fair price. “Storage is easily the most expensive part of cloud hosting,” he stated.

“What I like about OnApp’s approach is that we can use existing capacity in hypervisors, and extend that simply by adding more disks. There is no need to use traditional storage systems. This has the potential to really shake up the storage market, and change storage in the same way OnApp has changed the cloud.”

The storage will be the SAN distributed for cloud providers and enterprises by OnApp, enabling them to benefit from high performance and highly resilient SAN. This will be done by plugging standard SATA and SSD disks into the spare drive bays of their existing servers.

CEO of OnApp, Ditlev Bredahl, commented on the cost reduction and increase in performance which will be passed on to their customers “Bundling OnApp Storage with OnApp Cloud is just the latest way we’re adding features that help our customers stay profitable and competitive,” he admitted.

“We’re taking storage scale and cost problems away, for no additional cost. Any provider with a Full OnApp Cloud license will be able to build enterprise-class storage using their existing cloud infrastructure.

“That makes a huge difference in CAPEX compared with traditional centralized SANs, and it also means their storage scales in a completely linear and affordable way: as they grow and add hypervisors to their cloud, their storage scales too.”

OnApp, which launched in 2010, are currently publically beta testing the storage, using 340 Cloud Providers and Enterprises in the program. Their aim is to complete the test by the end of Q3 in 2012, with the intent of offering the platform to users shortly afterwards.
