Cloud Adoption Among Thai Companies Limited

Companies in Thailand are not adopting cloud solutions as quickly as in other countries, a new survey suggests. The survey, "Cloud Computing Readiness in Thailand 2014", indicates a "lower level of readiness" as far as cloud implementation in Thailand is concerned. Conducted by the IMC Institute, the survey suggests that only 28% of companies currently utilize the cloud.

The IMC Institute conducts market and policy research on emerging technology usage in Thailand. The organization provides support for businesses utilizing emerging technology in a bid to "go global" and become ready for integration of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. While the survey suggested relatively low cloud adoption across the board, it did suggest that more SMEs were intending to utilize the cloud than larger enterprises.

The survey was conducted using online questionnaires and involved interviewing IT executives, directors, managers and employees in the public and private sectors. 34% of the survey sample involved larger companies, with the remaining 66% SMEs. 26% of the sample involved IT businesses, while 15% were involved in department stores, energy, construction and printing. Finance and banking, manufacturing, and government made up the rest of the survey sample. Survey results indicated that 94% currently have onsite servers and only 28% use a private cloud. 29% of the organizations surveyed suggested that would utilize it in the future, but 43% have "no plans" to adopt the cloud.

"Cloud computing is able to change the information and communications technology industry, and it will be one of the factors in creating the digital economy, since it will enable business to reduce operational investment costs," explained Thanachart Numnonda, Executive Director of the IMC Institute. "Moreover, the digital economy will encourage small and medium-sized enterprises to use the public cloud, which also help them reduce costs for investment. Meanwhile, large enterprises will invest much more in the private cloud. Local software companies have the opportunity to provide cloud-computing software in terms of Software as a Service to the international market," he added.
