Cloud Giant Microsoft to Establish Cloud Data Centers in India

by Staff Writer

Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, has announced that the corporation will establish cloud data centers in India as the backbone for commercial cloud services in the sub-continent. These services will launch at the end of next year. There was no indication of the cost of setting up the centers or the number of people they would employ.

The news was announced by Nadella during his first press conference in India as CEO. His move is clearly motivated by India's 900 million mobile phone users and Microsoft's drive towards "a mobile, cloud-first world". "A mobile first world can't exist without a cloud first world," suggested Nadella at the press conference, adding "The cloud opportunity in India is a trillion-dollar opportunity".

Born in Hyderabad in 1967, Nadella received a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from India's Manipal University. He received a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then went on to receive an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Prior to becoming CEO of Microsoft he was Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Microsoft and the Vice President of the Microsoft Business solution group. He has been involved with Microsoft's Bing and its Server and Tools operations. He also played a key role in the corporation's move to the cloud.

Nadella aims for Microsoft to offer Azure and Office 365 cloud services to government (central and local) and businesses (with particular emphasis on targeting banking and financial services) in India. Regulations that enterprise and government data must be housed within India have been a hurdle as far as promoting Microsoft's cloud-based services within India are concerned. The corporation is targeting three operational data centers in three key cities by the end of 2015.
