Cloud information protection company CipherCloud has bought SaaS application security provider CloudUp Networks. The deal is in line with the company's commitment to providing solutions to safeguard sensitive data in the cloud. Financial aspects of the deal were not released.

CipherCloud offers a range of services designed to protect data in cloud environments. Its platform is utilized by around 2 million users in 14 countries and meets a number of compliance criteria, including GLBA, PCI, HIPAA and HITECH, the EU Data Protection Act, UK ICO guidance, the Australian Privacy Amendment Act and US State privacy laws.

The platforms enables users to highlight data anomalies and establish the required security controls to protect data being transferred to the cloud. CloudUp Networks technology extends the ability of CipherCloud's platform to "scan and tag different classes of data in order to protect sensitive organizational information". It also provides a "holistic" representation of data sensitivity in cloud applications and establishes risk levels for data. It is underpinned by AES 256-bit Encryption - the highest commercially available level of encryption.

“We continue to raise the bar for cloud information protection,” explained CipherCloud's founder and CEO Pravin Kothari. “The consumption of multiple cloud applications into the enterprise requires security to be in lock step with visibility. This acquisition reflects our strategy of growing our business with the tools our customers need to go to the cloud.”
