Cloud Storage Provider Dropbox Launches a Range of Apps

by Staff Writer

Cloud storage provider Dropbox has launched a “family of apps” clearly designed to help it compete with the likes of Google Drive, OneDrive, and other key players. The move comes after a recent round of funding and underscores the San Francisco-based startup’s aggressive strategy for growth. The company recently filed for a $250 million initial public offering and the news of the new apps comes in the wake of Dropbox adding former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice to its board.

The company’s new flagship app is “Carousel”, which is available on iOS and Android. It manages photo and document storing and sharing. It manages photos by storing them in files based on when they were created and in which location. The app was designed by Gentry Underwood, who designed the Mailbox email app that Dropbox bought in 2013, and which is also available as part of its new suite of apps (as “Mailbox for Android”).

“Project Harmony” was also announced. It offers Dropbox’s business customers collaboration tools to use with Microsoft Office apps including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Dropbox for Business has also been made available from its recent limited release. The service allows companies to create folders for specific departments within their organizations.
