IT and communications provider EarthLink, Inc. plans to add data centers, expand its fiber network and launch a “next generation” cloud hosting platform to meet “the growing demand for highly-secure cloud hosting and IT services,” it was announced recently.

EarthLink has made agreements with a number of providers to open new data centers in South Florida, Chicago, Dallas and San Jose throughout next year. The company will also add “next-generation cloud architecture” to its data center in Rochester, New York in early 2013.

According to the company, its next generation cloud architecture is a “state-of-the-art, integrated computing and storage platform” that will accommodate current and future IT Services business requirements. Through a network of eight data centers, EarthLink will enable “fault-tolerant enterprise class solutions” across the United States. It will interconnect its datacenters by expanding its fiber network and adding optical transport capabilities to increase capacity in a number of key markets. These will include Ashburn, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Orlando. The company will also extend its fiber network into Texas to cover seven additional markets including Austin, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.

"We see in the marketplace that the IT needs of companies are growing and evolving as they look for ways to virtualize their businesses and strategically maintain, if not decrease their cost structures," explained Michael Toplisek, Executive Vice President of Products and Marketing at EarthLink. "As a result, EarthLink is continuing to evolve our IT solutions architecture, infrastructure and services. By providing regional data center diversity combined with our expanded national IP network footprint, EarthLink can deliver the performance customers need with the peace of mind that their data is secure in our cloud. Beyond cloud hosting, in conjunction with our IP and fiber network expansion, EarthLink is poised to deliver disaster recovery and business continuity solutions that are mission-critical to businesses in all industries."
