Google Drops Cloud Storage Prices

by Staff Writer

Google has dropped the cost of its cloud storage solution, Google Drive. Alongside its standard free 15GB accounts, the corporation is offering 100GB of Google Drive storage at only $1.99 per month, down from $4.99 month.

Google has also dropped the price of its 1TB plans from $49.99 per month, to a very affordable $9.99 per month. In addition, its 10TB accounts are now available at only $99.99 per month. The corporation has said it will provide quotations for organizations and individuals that need more than 10TB storage.

The move shadows rivals such as Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive. Dropbox’s rates are $9.99 per month for 100GB and $15 per month for unlimited business accounts. OneDrive accounts cost $50 a year for 100GB, while 200GB accounts cost $100 per year. A number of analysts believe a reduction in the costs of Google’s Infrastructure-as-a-Service storage options will also soon be announced.

Google charges $6.30 for 100GB of mainstream Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud storage, meaning that Google Drive is now available for less – a sure sign that the company is realigning pricing. This is likely to spur an even more intense price war with competitors and the move comes just before Google’s Google Cloud Platform Live event is held in San Francisco March 25, 2014 – an ideal venue to announce price cuts.

Will Google’s move set off a new price war? How low can prices go? Add your comments below.
