IT Storage Hardware Solutions Provider EMC to Acquire Cloud Startup Cloudscaling

Hopkinton, Massachusetts-based IT storage hardware solutions provider EMC Corporation (EMC) is to acquire cloud startup Cloudscaling Group Inc. The aim of the acquisition is to enable EMC to enhance its storage offerings through the provision of free software and to extend its cloud platform support capability. Financial details have not been released, but it is thought the deal is in the $50 million region.

Cloudscaling was established in 2006 and previously received in excess of $10 million from investment companies like Juniper Networks Inc. and Trinity Ventures. It has headquarters in San Francisco and provides "on-premise elastic cloud infrastructure solutions", meaning its solutions enable companies to link their computers together using OpenStack - a solution developed in collaboration between Rackspace Hosting Inc. and NASA. The company's solutions also enable computers utilizing OpenStack to merge with public clouds, particularly Google and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Enabling its storage products to work with OpenStack will encourage enterprises to use EMC Corporation services.

The news of the acquisition continues a trend of larger companies purchasing startups. Hewlett-Packard (HP) agreed to purchase Eucalyptus Systems Inc. recently while Cisco Systems Inc. bought Metacloud last month.
