Microsoft Introduces Office 365 Personal

Microsoft is introducing a cheaper version of its Office 365 productivity suite. Known as “Office 365 Personal”, it will be available at only $6.99 per month, or $69.99 per year. Although like other packages Office 365 Personal offers 20GB of OneDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype calls per month, it will only be available through one desktop and one mobile device. This compares poorly against another Microsoft package at a competitive price, Office 365 Home (formerly “Office 365 Home Premium”), which enables users to access the cloud-based software from 5 desktops and 5 mobile devices.

“We recognize that there are households of all shapes and sizes and we’re committed to delivering the right Office for everyone – whether that be one person or an entire household,” explained Senior Marketing Manager at Microsoft, Chris Schneider. “We’re committed to delivering a great Office experience to all of our customers and believe that giving you a choice about the Office 365 subscription that fits your unique needs is one way we can do that. We’ll have more details to share closer to availability,” suggested Mr. Schneider on the office.com blog.

The news comes against a backdrop of cloud-based services dropping prices, and Microsoft’s suggestion that Windows 8.1 could be offered free of charge – a complete divergence as far as the company’s traditional business model is concerned. Office 365 currently has around 3.5 million subscribers.
