Microsoft Office 365 Now Allows Users to Send Encrypted Emails

by Staff Writer

Microsoft Office 365 now allows users to send encrypted emails to customers and others outside their companies. The move is the culmination of activity that began in November 2013 when the corporation announced plans for “Office 365 Message Encryption” to offer protection from unauthorized access to sensitive information such as credit card details and financial information.

According to Microsoft’s blog, Office 365 Message Encryption is an “enhanced version of Exchange Hosted Encryption (EHE)”. Those wishing to utilize Microsoft’s new service must purchase a Windows Azure Rights Management subscription, which offers Office 365 Enterprise E3 and E4. Existing Office 365 E3, Office 365 E4 or Windows Azure Rights Management users will also have access to the encrypted email. Those using Exchange Server 2013 will be able to access Office 365 Message Encryption using Exchange Online Protection (EOP) or “by using hybrid mail-flow”.

Microsoft have made encryption a “vital part of (their) security and compliance vision for the future” and its latest move underscores the company’s commitment to secure email services. The move is almost certainly a response to the fact that Microsoft was mentioned in revelations that the American National Security Agency (NSA) monitor email sent through major American Internet companies with cloud-based email services.

Microsoft’s new encrypted email solution will be shown at the Microsoft Exchange Conference on 31March 2014 in Austin, Texas, USA.

Will Microsoft’s new encrypted email solution provided the security you need? Let us know your thoughts. Add your comments below.
