Microsoft SkyDrive Migrates to Microsoft OneDrive

by Staff Writer

After significant fanfare, Microsoft SkyDrive has finally migrated to Microsoft OneDrive. The rebranding was initially driven by legal action brought against Microsoft by British broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting who claimed the term ‘SkyDrive’ as a trademark. However, Microsoft has used the court’s ruling as a springboard for a full rebranding that is clearly intended to position the corporation’s cloud-based storage solution as a challenge to the likes of Google Drive and Dropbox.

As a result of the rebranding, users can enjoy a number of promotional goodies including 7 gigabytes of storage free of charge. Users making referrals will receive also 5GB of additional free storage per new OneDrive consumer. In addition, Microsoft has developed an Android app which will backup mobile phone photos directly to the cloud, and to entice people to download the app, a further 3GB of free storage is available to users.

The app offers users a number of useful settings, particularly being able to upload pictures to the cloud only when wifi is connected. In addition, you can set a limit to the size of images you want to upload, and the app works with Office Mobile and OneNote to improve document editing.

50GB OneDrive plans are now available at $4.49 a month and packages go up in increments to 200GB at $11.49 a month. However, lucky followers of Microsoft’s OneDrive Twitter feed could receive 100GB of free storage for a year if they access their account at a specific time which will be specified throughout today (19 February 2014).
