Reports Suggest Managed Cloud Storage Provider Nirvanix to End Online Services

September 20, 2013
by Staff Writer

A number of reports have suggested that managed cloud storage provider and HP and IBM partner Nirvanix is to end its online services, with some reports suggesting the company has given customers only 2 weeks to make arrangements for the transfer of their data - too short a time frame for many to manage a successful transfer of services.

The company, which is facing financial problems, apparently told customers to move data to another provider by September 30, 2013, but has subsequently extended this deadline to October 15, 2013. Despite the extension, given the bandwidth available to the service, the time period given will not be long enough for the company's customers to transfer huge amounts of data.

As with most cloud solutions, Nirvanix's cloud is designed to facilitate customers entering the cloud, with limited resources allocated to accounts leaving the cloud. With customers trying to exit Nirvanix's cloud, a fixed bandwidth will invariably be allocated to each customer and one estimate suggests it might take up to 12 months to transfer one petabyte of data. One of the company's customers reportedly has 20 petabytes of data which now needs transferring.

Although an official announcement has yet to be made on the issue, the company's British partner, Cloud Aorta, is apparently trying to secure finances for Nirvanix. Despite public concerns, the company is still apparently accepting new customers. HP and IBM have guided customers towards Nirvanix's services for some time, and having done so there is speculation that the two giants might step in and assist customers' migrations.
