State-owned Chinese Telecommunications Operator China Unicom Enters the Cloud

December 26, 2013
by Staff Writer

China Unicom, a state-owned Chinese telecommunications operator, is launching Cloud-based public IaaS and PaaS services under the Wo-Cloud brand which will be offered to its customers in mainland China utilizing its broadband and 3G options. The services will leverage OpenStack cloud technology.

The move comes immediately after a flurry of “Cloud” activity that focused on the Chinese mainland. Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently announced it would operate out of China after signing an MOU with the Government of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region. The company plans a range of offerings and will be ready to preview services in early 2014.

Only a day after AWS’ announcement, Amazon announced it would offer managed private cloud services from mainland China by working with its partner 21Vianet Group. This follows Microsoft’s 2012 partnership with 21Vianet that will bring its Windows Azure and Office 365 services to China.

Aside from competing against each other, Wo-Cloud and the other cloud players with interests in mainland China must also compete with Alibaba whose cloud-arm Aliyun is increasing its footprint and extending its services both on the domestic market and internationally.

What else is new on the cloud front? Let us know the details. Add your comments below.
