Technology and services giant Dell Inc. has bought enterprise cloud-management company Enstratius in a move that many suggest means the company is staking its claim in the cloud. Founded in 2008 with headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Enstratius' was noted as being an innovative startup by research company Gartner and recognized as one of the top 20 "Coolest Cloud Platforms" in 2012 by CRN. It supports around 20 public and private cloud platforms, including OpenStack, VMware, Rackspace, Amazon Web Services and Windows Azure.

The company offers Dell single and multi-cloud management capabilities that enable customers to establish private, public and hybrid clouds to manage applications. Enstratius cloud options scale automatically and provide automated application configuration and utilization monitoring.

Dell’s purchase enhances the company's end-to-end solutions capabilities and underscores a strategy that moves it away from traditional PC sales as its key source of revenue. Customers can utilize Enstratius as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution, or as an in house solution controlled from a customer’s data center, or as a hosted service. Enstratius simplifies management providing self-service capability through a range of tools that help users create and deploy applications across one or more cloud instance.

"As enterprises increase their use of public, private and hybrid clouds, the need for controls, security, governance and automation becomes more critical," explained Dell Software's Vice President and General Manager, Systems Management, Tom Kendra. "Dell, together with Enstratius, is uniquely positioned to deliver differentiated, complete cloud-management solutions to enterprise customers, large and small, empowering them with the efficiency and flexibility in the allocation and use of resources."
